Real Haunts So here's the deal. Most people say there's no such thing as ghosts. If you ask any scientist, they will do their best to discredit most. The problem, much like religion, the masses have spoken and say ghosts DO exist, whether they can be proved with science or not.

The Winchester Estate
In California (525 S. Winchester Blvd. / San Jose, CA. to be exact) lies a house I am fasinated with.
When William Wirt Winchester, the heir of the Winchester fortune, died, his wife Sarah began visiting spiritulists in Boston. This person convinced Sarah that she was going to be haunted by all the people ever killed by the famous rifle.
Sarah moved to California and bought a 18 room house. A lot of rooms? Guess not, because she hired twenty- two carpenters to add more rooms. One of the rooms was her Seance Room. This room was forbidden to everyone until her death because she believed that if anyone but her entered it, it would become unclean and evil spirits would dominate it. . This room can only be found by navigating the many rooms and passages.
Her thinking was to create enough rooms for "good" ghosts while tricking "evil" ghosts by way of stairways going nowhere, doors that open to solid walls and even a room full of balconies of all shapes and sizes. The end result is a house with 160 rooms, 47 fireplaces and 13 bathrooms.
Woodruff Estate
Featured in Family Circle, Wall Street Journal, USA Today and Life magazine lies the "Most Haunted House on America".
Found on Highway 61 / St. Francisville, LA / 70775, this house was built in 1796 by Gen. David Bradford, he sold the house to his son-in-law, Clarke Woodruff, in 1817. The tragic history of the house began when one of Clark's slaves, Cloe, was caught eavsdropping on a meeting. Clarke ordered Cloes ear cut off. After a while, Cloe wanted to show Clarke that he was still needed. He devised a plan to put poisonous olleander flowers into the birthday cake of Clarke's eldest daughter. When they became sick, Cloe would nurse them all back to health. Mixing too much, Clarke's wife and both daughters died. Clarke was spared because he did not eat any. When the other slaves heard what Cloe had done, they took him outside and hung him. Cloe has been seen many times and even once on film.
In 200 years, there has been a total of 10 murders commited around it.
Amityville
In Amityville, Long Island (112 Ocean ave. but the address has been changed to avoid sightseers) is the most famous haunted house of all time. The problem is, it isn't haunted.
In June 1965, Richard DeFoe Sr. bought this 2 1/2 story Dutch Colnial house. He moved in with his wife, 2 boys, 2 girls and Richard "Butch" DeFoe Jr. Though Richard Sr. was rich enough to offer his son an easy job at a car lot, Richard Jr. hated him.
Richard Jr. started robbing and doing drugs. At 17, he would have fist fights with his dad because of his temper. He thought of an idea to rob his father, but when his dad found out, Butch wanted revenge.
On November 13, 1974, Butch grabbed a .35 Marlin Rifle and shot ever member of his family in the head. He tried to blame it on a Mafia hit man but soon confessed, saying, "As far as I'm concerned, if I didn't kill my family, they were going to kill me. And as far as I'm concerned, what I did was self-defense and there was nothing wrong with it. When I got a gun in my hand, there's no doubt in my mind who I am. I am God."
He was found guilty of 6 counts of murder.
Speculations on the murders still abound. The family was found in their respective beds. The heads resting on their arms. A rifle like that could be heard a mile away. Why didn't the other members hear it? What's with the positioning of the bodies? Why didn't they run after hearing the shots?
Butch was due for parole in 2001, but I didn't see where he got out. The police were quoted, saying
DeFoe "shows a total disregard for human life and release at this time is incompatable with the safety and welfare of the community.".
